Malaysia EV Number Plate Launched – Special Car Plate Only For EVs
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook launching the new number plate specifically reserved for EVs.
Who Will Get This Plate?
The number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia is growing day by day. You would probably have noticed more and more EVs from the likes of BMW, Kia, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Volvo, Tesla, BYD, Chery & MG on the road. Today, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Road Transport Department (JPJ) officially released the highly-anticipated special number plate design for EVs. This new JPJePlate is mandatory for all new EV registrations beginning 9th September 2024 onwards. Existing EV owners can also purchase this, but they will only be able to order this for their EVs starting 9th November 2024. These are available for RM98.
What Are Some Special Features?
The special number plate includes an embedded RFID chip in the aluminium number plate. The plate itself is made from aluminium and has retro-reflective characteristics to it in order to make the number plate visible more visible at night. Of course, one can also see the Jalur Gemilang & Malaysia abbreviation (MAL) clearly on the left hand side of the design. There is also a new color code on the left to indicate the vehicle’s fuel type. Green has been chosen for EVs.
The font is also standardized, and it is hoped that this will eliminate non-regulation fonts, which will in turn assist with vehicle identification for law enforcement purposes.
Special Number Plate Series
At the same event, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Road Transport Department (JPJ) also launched a special EV series number plate (EV 1 to EV 9999) which is now open for bidding on the JPJeBid potal. Once the EV series runs out, it will be followed by EVA 1 to EVA 9999, EVB 1 to EVB 9999 and so forth. The minimum bid starts from RM300 and bidding will end Friday, 13th September at 10pm.
