KUALA LUMPUR – 24 Oct 2023 – EV Connection Sdn Bhd (EVC) and Gentari have launched the very first EV charging station that comes with its own battery energy storage system (BESS) in Sotheast Asia. Located at Behrang (Northbound) Layby along the North-South Expressway, the charging station has two Kempower DC EV chargers that can fast charge four electric vehicles (EV) simultaneously.

Described as a Modular EV Fast Charging Station, this EV charging location with four charging bays is supported by batteries and solar panels. The hybrid EV charging solution enables EV Connection to overcome issues related to insufficient grid capacity in certain areas. While charge point operators want to install large DC charging hubs with multiple bays, power remains a key issue for deployments on interstate highways. The BESS at Behrang has a capacity of 300kWh to power the EV chargers. EV owners will be able to top up their batteries quickly as long as the battery pack have sufficient charge. During non-peak hours, these battery packs can be recharged via solar or from the grid.

For this location, EV Connection & Gentari have installed two standalone Kempower DC chargers (200kW and 100kW) that are equipped with two CCS2 nozzles. Gentari shared that if there’s only one vehicle at the location, the charger can deliver up to 200kW. The modular EV charging station is also designed to be mobile and it can be relocated to other high-demand inter-state highway locations during peak season. 

Malaysia’s Minister of Works Alexander Nanta Linggi said the collaboration between PLUS and Gentari, is a significant joint effort that can harness the unique strengths of each organization to support an environmentally friendly transportation system, creating a more conducive environment for the use of eco-friendly vehicles.

“At the Ministry, we are committed to achieving Malaysia’s sustainability goals, and I believe that this collaboration will play a crucial role in inspiring the people of Malaysia to support low-carbon transportation solutions, in line with the objectives outlined in the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12), the Malaysia Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP), and the Low Carbon Mobility Development Plan (LCMB),” he said.
